Pre-Meal for Mar 19, 2025What Does Right Look Like?

Happy Wednesday!

I’m a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan. And yes, I’m still mourning how this season ended. But I won’t waste time here debating whether Josh Allen got that first down; this Pre-Meal is actually about the game that preceded it, when Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens catastrophically fumbled the pass in the two-point conversion that would have tied the game.

The response from some Ravens fans was rough. After a few days of devastated silence, Andrews finally posted this: “I’m absolutely gutted by what happened.” He went on to say he’d seen “heartfelt love and encouragement... Even when the moment seems darkest, perspective can reveal that there’s still a lot of light in this world.”

At least some of that light came from the fact that thousands of Bills fans — the so-called Bills Mafia — had put out the call to support Andrews’s favorite charity, Breakthrough T1D, which supports Type 1 diabetes research. They raised well over $100,000 for the organization.

It’s not the first charitable drive Bills fans have done for a player on an opposing team; in fact, by my calculations, they’ve raised over a million dollars this way. But these acts of generosity don’t make the Bills any less competitive on the field, or the fans any less fervent in their support. They’re just beautiful gestures of sportsmanship and solidarity.

When I’m facing a tough decision, my dad always asks me, “What does right look like? Do that.” Often the answer seems counterintuitive — like sending a charitable donation in support of your rival team’s tight end after a bad mistake. But when I use that question as my compass, I always seem to end up in the right place.

Have a good service,

Will
